February Celebrations

In the 1993 film Groundhog Day, Bill Murray plays Phil Connors, a weatherman who lives February 2nd over and over, reporting on Punxsutawney Phil and wooing Andie MacDowell anew each time. Some daily rituals become a drag - like waking up to “I Got You, Babe” and running into high school classmate Ned Ryerson each morning. Others are joyous: snowball fights in the park and learning to play the piano.

Imagine if he’d known that February 2nd is also National Tater Tot Day. Now there’s some joy: day after day of crispy, fried potato deliciousness.

Know why Bill Murray looks so sad? Because those tater-tots are photoshopped. Not-tot original photo by the Los Angeles Times.

Twelve days later, we get Valentine’s Day, the holiday people love to hate. I am 100% not one of these people. I love all the love and writing love notes.

If you just threw up a little bit, here are a few alternative occasions you can mark this month. You probably know someone who would appreciate a postcard wishing them a happy day for one of these:

  • February 1: National Dark Chocolate Day and National Freedom Day

  • February 2: National Hedgehog Day and National Ukelele Day (in addition to the two aforementioned, of course)

  • February 3: National Golden Retriever Day (Sugar likes that one!) and National Women Physicians Day (Sugar wants to know if she can go to med school now and claim the 3rd as her day)

  • February 4: National Thank a Mail Carrier Day

  • February 5: National Wear Red Day and National Shower With a Friend Day (maybe plan your red outfits while you’re in the shower?)

Ok, let’s pause here to say: We most definitely are not making any of this up. In case you were wondering.

  • February 6: Time to Talk Day

  • February 7: National Send a Card to a Friend Day (or a postcard, we’d like to add)

  • February 8: National Kite-Flying Day

  • February 9: National Pizza Day and National Toothache Day (related, perhaps?)

  • February 10: National Umbrella Day

  • February 11: International Day of Women and Girls in Science and National Make a Friend Day

  • February 12: Chinese New Year

  • February 13: World Radio Day and Galentine’s Day

  • February 14: National Ferris Wheel Day and National Organ Donor Day (let’s really hope these aren’t related)

  • February 15: President’s Day

  • February 16: Mardi Gras and National Pancake Day

  • February 17: Random Act of Kindness Day

  • February 18: National Drink Wine Day

  • February 19: National Vet Girls RISE Day and National Caregivers Day

  • February 20: National Love Your Pet Day and National Muffin Day (Sugar’s gonna be asking for muffins)

  • February 21: National Sticky Bun Day

  • February 22: National Walk the Dog Day and National Margarita Day (not May 5th? weird.)

  • February 23: National Dog Biscuit Day (the muffins weren’t enough?)

  • February 24: National Tortilla Chip Day (anyone else getting hungry?)

  • February 25: National Toast Day and National Chili Day

  • February 26: Yukon Heritage Day and National Tell a Fairy Tale Day

  • February 27: International Polar Bear Day and National Retro Day

  • February 28: National Tooth Fairy Day (to thank her for the cash after your National Toothache Day incident)

  • February 29: Rare Disease Day

Spoiler alert: Phil Connors eventually wakes up to February 3rd (and the girl, of course). Hopefully they stayed together at least a couple days more - long enough to celebrate National Weatherperson’s Day on February 5th.
